Enough Gear?

Getting ready for a wedding shoot in Albany tomorrow. Is this enough gear?David Sobik is a want-to-be canon shooter clearly!!!..as you can see the good side is the right hand side – the “red” side not the gold side.

Moora – Video Tutorial Final Result

I  just finished a video for you all on how to get the following stylized result. Considering the time (wee hours of the morning!) there is bound to be some mistakes. Ahhhh this takes me back to all-nighters in Sydney editing films and commercials! MMMMMmmmm COFFEE!!!!

The tutorial comes with the following recommendations/warnings:

1) Turn on the kettle and pour a nice hot beverage

2) Even better….just head straight to the wine cabinet

3) Take notes!

4) Don’t fall asleep.

Finally,  if  this tutorial has helped make sure you repost it on you’re site so others can share the love. Just copy and paste the following link:

Enjoy.

Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo

Over the last couple of weeks the Macadamia tree in the backyard has attracted some beautiful creatures. Sitting patiently I managed to capture a curious Carnaby last weekend.

When the flock return next weekend (guaranteed!) I hope to capture some birds feeding on the Macadamia nuts. Although at times like this I tend to put down the camera and enjoy watching the endangered birds calling and carrying on.

Until next time

Happy Shooting

MASSIVE

I want to tell everyone out there that this will be one of my last posts for a while.

Currently I under going some MASSIVE plans that will be taking me away from my blog for a while.

Hopefully I will find some time to post the odd image throughout the year so keep checking every now and again.

Here’s a photo that I  had sitting on my hard drive waiting to go.

All I can say about my MASSIVE plans at the moment is – “Look out there is a train coming!”

Horrocks Beach

About two weeks ago I went to Geraldton for work. On saturday morning I managed to get myself up at 4am for the sunrise to go and take photos out at Horrocks Beach with Shawn and Zoe.

Shot this image with my trousers rolled up and tripod legs submerged in the water.  I have a few more to go through so stay tuned.

Make sure you check out Shawn’s and  Zoe’s blogs.  They both have some amazing images.

Vervet Monkey

Thought I might post a self portrait!

Monkeys certainly keep you on your toes as a photographer. This little ball of fur was frantically running around from the canopy to the ground. Up down, up down it just didn’t end!  Patiently I watched this little critter for about 20 minutes and managed to capture the take away.

Madfish Bay

I went out in the middle of the day with David Sobik to photograph some classic blue sky shots at Madfish Bay near Demark, Western Australia. Came into a bit of a problem with the light. Calm had decided that they wanted to do an aerial burn. Bye bye blue sky.  However filters to the rescue!

If you would like to know the story behind this photos and see a photo of me taking this photo click here.  I got a bit wet for this shot!

On the way home

This image was taken yesterday as I drove back to Perth along Albany Highway. Shot using the trusty Canon 1D MKIII and EF 17 – 40mm f4L with a Hoya ND8.

Nanarup Sunrise

I’m down in Albany at the moment preparing for a wedding next week. I left Perth 11pm and drove through the night to get to Nanarup beach to meet with a good mate Andrew Halsall. (If you haven’t added him to your blog roll do it now – you can check out his new blog here)

I ended up wading through the water in my boots to get these images. Images were shot using the Canon EOS 1D MKIII & Canon EF 17-40 f4 L.

Arid

I went out with a few locals from Geraldton who were kind enough to show me the sites worth photographing. Thanks Shawn and Wade!

More photos to post when I come back from my little holiday.

Enjoy

Impala

When you go to Africa this is the most common type of animal you find as everything seems to eat it. Impala are truly beautiful creatures. If you ever get the chance spend a day with them and it will be a day you won’t forget.

I was driving past when I saw this and it instantly reminded me of the classic Bambi shot. All it needed was Thumper in the foreground and a little blue bird sitting on the branch above.

Emily’s Animal Shots

Here is the first of the animal shots submitted by Emily. If you have any animal shots send me the link and I’ll post them!

As you can see she has set the standard high. Well done Em the depth of field on these images is beautiful.

Keep up the great work!

Lioness

At this stage my reaction was to pull the lens in, start the car very very quickly and power the electric windows up so I wouldn’t get eaten.

The setup I took to the Kruger worked for me. I took the following…

1x Lowepro Photo Trekker AW II,   1x Canon 1D MK III,   1x Canon 40D with grip,   1x Simga 10mm f2.8 fisheye,    1x Canon 85mm f1.2,    1x Sigma 120-300mm f2.8,    1x Sigma 2x teleconvertor,  1x Velbon Sherpa Pro 8 with Manfrotto Monopod Head,   160GB external HD,    Trusty HP laptop and various other camera accessories.

I hired a Kia Sportivo (never buy one they are horrible) for the height and seating arrangement. My carbon fiber Velbon Sherpa Pro 8 sat snuggly between the seat adjustment located on the right hand side of my seat and the door. It allowed me to shoot completely hands free with the 1D and sigma 120-300 & 2x convertor just a swivel away. Tracking subjects was easy. I will post some photos of some birds and Wild Dog that I drove next to while shooting.

All together I did about 1000kms at a top speed of 50kms.

Problems: Rental Cars are horrible in Africa. Book well in advance. The car you book is not the one you will ever end up with.

For my next trip I plan to go to the Okavango Swamps. Any keen photographers willing to put their lives on the line to get the shot let me know. I could use the bait!

Keep checking the blog to see a range of animals and the occasional landscape shot.

Until then. Enjoy

Spotted Eagle Owl

This bird just sounds great! An eagle and an owl combinded what more could you want?

I just wish that it had a big fat mongoose or something hanging from its mouth. That would have really made the shot – oh well…it just means I will have to go back to Africa again – damm.

This ones my favorite..

I hope you all like the new redesigned frame.

Look out for the next post….LION! Stay tuned.

Happy Shooting

If any bloggers are going to the Phase night at Team Digital I might just bump into you. I will be going relatively early as I will be leaving for Africa later in the evening. Looking forward to learning about the ‘latest phase’.
