Pink Grey and Wild

Striking pink and pale grey suit this jovial character.

A sumptuous sunflower seed is pure indulgence for the bird who seems to speak a trilled language.

The messiness of the order tumbles from a worked beak.

A smile ignites in his eye and enlightens a cheeky personality as the burst of seed is enough to make this bird wild.

Fine Art Osprey

The Osprey would certainly be my favourite bird to photograph because they have so much character.

This Osprey was happy to pose for me on my last trip to Geraldton with Shawn Haywood. The sun shone brightly so I was able to get the amazing catch light in its eye.  I used about 5 images of trees, clouds and an oil tank to create this fine art portrait. Enjoy.

Endangered – Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo

Western Australia is truly an amazing place. I am very fortunate to be able to travel this great state and see many places and experience many rare sites. The Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo is one of those birds that stops you in your tracks!  Its truly a rare beautiful site when you see one of the birds these days.

I wanted to photograph this bird and bring the endangered cockatoo to everyone’s attention. I know of a few places where these birds gather in large numbers of 200 or more and for most locals these birds are considered pests but for the rest of the world these birds are extremely rare as they can only be found in parts of Western Australia.

Please enjoy the beauty of this creature and pay close attention to the environment around you next time you are outdoors….lets all preserve our wildlife for the next generation.

Splendid Fairy Wren

This Splendid Fairy Wren or more commonly known as the Blue Wren would have to be one of the most spectacular birds in Australia.

Photographing these small birds can be quite challenging  A steady hand, long lens and quick focus certainly help. I think all my bucket practice certainly came in handy!

Have you ever photographed one of these birds before? I would be interested to see your photos so be sure to drop a link to any of your images below.

Fishing Tern

I watched as the darting bird stealthily fished beyond the reaches of my telephoto lens. The bird dove with tucked wings from a standing height; water erupted on the horizon as the bird breached the surface chasing a scaly meal from the watery depths below.

The choice of a telephoto lens was rewarding, I was able to separate the common predator from the breaking waves and colourful ocean hues. It’s such a shame the Tern returned to shore without a prize meal as it would have made the photo into a masterpiece. I suppose that is what wildlife photography is all about, you may capture a great image you may not – it can be so unpredictable if you don’t know what you are looking for. You simply have to perceive and eventually the behaviour of an animal will become known. It is only then you can master the art of wildlife photography.

Wedge Tailed Eagle

This Wedge Tailed Eagle was captured near the Stirling Ranges. The magnificent bird is certainly my favourite to photograph and one of the hardest!

Osprey Feathers

Osprey feathers fly silently upon the wind soaring in grandeur. Patterns dance in the breeze above. Light falls on feathers enhancing pools of striking reds and electric blues.  The sound of the sea stirs, the powerful Osprey beats its wings steadily toward the headland wind. Eyesight sharp and focused.

Mysterious shapes travel below in the churning water.  The powerful bird tucks wings and dives to the depths grasping its trophy within its sharp talons. Beats of power gracefully lift the bird to its place of rest were it consumes its prize. Victory has its calling, the Osprey cries a whistles in the wind preening its feathers with pride.

Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo

Over the last couple of weeks the Macadamia tree in the backyard has attracted some beautiful creatures. Sitting patiently I managed to capture a curious Carnaby last weekend.

When the flock return next weekend (guaranteed!) I hope to capture some birds feeding on the Macadamia nuts. Although at times like this I tend to put down the camera and enjoy watching the endangered birds calling and carrying on.

Until next time

The Bird Flu Flew

The last couple of weeks have been absolutely terrible for my health.  It seems like I have just been sick non stop! Last week I have had a HORRIBLE virus/cold that has put me in bed for the majority of the weekend. Being stuck indoors is one of my biggest fears! I had to do something and quick! I grabbed the nearest set of car keys and picked up my camera with wide angle attached and set off.

Bibra lake was freezing! Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea! I killed two birds with one stone though. I have just finished putting together a multirow shoot that Ash from Camera Electronic was requesting…it should be up later on this evening so stay tuned. I much happier with the video quality on my tutorials so over time there should be some more coming.

This image of a Welcome Swallow was shot using my Canon 17-40mm f4.

Osprey

My favorite wildlife image… until I take the next one!

Ask yourself the question…what is in your backyard….If you have any wildlife where you are why not take a shot of it and post it! I would love to see it.

Back from Geraldton

In my previous post I set myself a challenge to get a few specific shots while I was in Geraldton.

RESULT!!! Stay tuned tomorrow morning for another shot.

Lilac Breasted Roller

African Elephant

What is with my mind only being creative at night???? It seems like I only post images late at night!

I searched my Elephant data base and found this image which was perfect for a bit of B&W and a touch of film grain.

My thoughts are the blacks in the image are a little bit too crushed but hey I kind of like that.

Thanks for taking the time to view my images.  I really enjoy your comments so keep them coming!

Bibra Lake

Waking up was the hardest part today. My body just wanted to keep sleeping but I’m glad my mind was stronger because I had the best morning shoot ever!

The subject: Black Swans

Got to Bibra Lake (1 minute away) by moonlight and these were some of the results.

Enjoy.

Until next time.

Happy Shooting!

Red Billed Hornbill

And now…. (insert drum roll)….  for the other African Hornbill…..

I was actually photographing this bird when the huge grasshopper flew into the shot.

Unfortunately I missed the quick grab by the Hornbill but managed to get a sequence of shots of the squirming grasshopper trying to escape the beak of death. It was all over very quickly and gut free. I think it would have been quite crunchy!

Until next time…

Happy Shooting!
