Pink Grey and Wild

Striking pink and pale grey suit this jovial character.

A sumptuous sunflower seed is pure indulgence for the bird who seems to speak a trilled language.

The messiness of the order tumbles from a worked beak.

A smile ignites in his eye and enlightens a cheeky personality as the burst of seed is enough to make this bird wild.

Sunset at Mosman Beach

People were out and about as the afternoon light fell upon the earth. I passed an energetic exerciser running on the beach as she was frantically being chased by a pack of wet dogs. The soggy reward of a tennis ball seemed to be enough to keep the dogs running up and down the beach. With dogs of all sizes running around me in every direction I had to be carefully carrying my camera as it might have been mistaken for a play thing. The dog owners seemed to sense my panic and the call of names filled the air. “Rex, Peach, Sacha, Lady – come here!”- “Lady come here!” With a delayed scurry, flicked sand filled the air and the disobedient dogs bolted in the direction of the newly found tennis ball.  The though of a being jumped on by a wet slobbery retriever was too much to bear so I set off from the pack to capture the sunset.

Crashing waves broke on me as I walked the shallow shores of Mosman Beach. I headed for the rocks toward the end of the beach and was met by a young family fishing the shores. Trying not to interfere with their recreational activity I dodged the lines and found myself at this scene. Clouds on the horizon hung full of colour. I found some jagged rocks to fill the foreground and flicked the camera on.  With the 18mm set on my Fujifilm X-Pro 1 I composed the image into three photographs as later I was going to stitch them together.

When I arrived home I got a little distracted from an immediate upload due to a tooth ache. After another journey to the chemist for some strong pain relief I find myself sitting here typing this story for you all and uploading the latest free photograph.

I hope you enjoy this image. I certainly enjoyed taking it.

Sony A99 Sample Photo

Over the next couple of days I will have a few more photos to post that I captured using the new Sony A99. Of course as always I have styled the jpeg file using Photoshop. Thanks to Sony for an amazing night of photography.

Sony A99 and Sony NEX 6 Portraits

A few hours ago I picked up a few Sony A99’s and Sony NEX 6 cameras.

Leigh Diprose holding six Sony A99 full frame cameras

All these photos are nothing serious just a bit of fun as I wanted to test what the jpeg quality was like.  Overall I think the image quality is quite good from the basic file size although I had to do a bit of styling in Photoshop to get the result I wanted.

Self Portrait – Background

I have been working on this background for an interesting project – my self portrait.  Over my many years of portrait photography I have never taken my own photograph so I’m considering it a challenge. Next month there will be a Photoshop video showing how I will get to the final image.

My self portrait is a work in progress….the background is sorted so now all I have to do is add in the rest….hopefully it works out.

cameraED – Nikon 1 V1 Review

Cameras and technology have changed so much in the past 12 months not to mention the last decade. I have been involved within the imaging industry now for over 13 years and have seen many advances from the first 1.3MP Kodak Easyshare camera to the ground breaking 36MP Nikon D800E. Throughout my time in the photography world one thing has always remained  – the chase for the best camera design whilst still delivering perfect image quality – enter the Nikon 1 series.

You see at first I was sceptical when I first saw this camera. I thought to myself can such a small sensor produce sharp images; and the look of the camera…was this even a camera?…was Nikon serious? A day out with the camera was going to change my mind.

I jumped in the car with the small white camera in my hand and the spare lens nestled in my pocket. The sun was out and the streets were busy. I decided to head to the local markets – the famous Fremantle Markets.

I noticed a crowd had gathered near the entrance to the markets and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to photograph some candid portraits. In the past I hadn’t had much success with street photograph due to my big Canon DSLR – most of the time I was discouraged by local authorities – this didn’t even present as a problem with the Nikon V1.  I was encouraged to join in the fun as the crowd encouraged the local entertainer to perform insane stunts. I found myself in awe of the talented busker. He had the myself and the crowd engrossed in the performance. I anticipated a perfect moment was about to present itself so I switched the camera to video mode and set the quality to Full HD. The busker didn’t disappoint, he proceeded to perform for the crowd thrusting whips in the air filling the busy street with deaf defining cracks as the two whips danced about above his head. The Queensland Crossover was in full swing and I wasn’t missing a beat thanks to the amazing video feature on the V1. This experience had summed up my day. The camera was amazing especially the video. Later on that day I played back the video on the high res screen and chucked to myself as I relived the moment.

I put together a small video showcasing some of the standout features I experience when using the camera. All the sample images are shown below most of which were photographed at ISO 1600 due to the low light in the undercover markets.

If I could pass on one piece of advice when thinking about buying a new camera it would be – you wouldn’t judge a book by its cover…so in turn you should never judge a camera by its cover until you delve into the features and experience the image quality for yourself.

Until next time.

Happy Shooting.

Camera Course

Last week Andrew Halsall and myself (Leigh Diprose) ran a Camera Course which was promoted through selected Camera House stores; Midland, Morley, Joondalup and Fremantle. On the course participants were encouraged to interact with their cameras on a completely new level. The course covered everything from camera controls, landscape, portrait, macro, flash photography and quite a bit more!

The highlight of the course was putting all the new knowledge to practice with a model shoot out a Araluen Botanical Park in Roleystone. Participants were put into groups and were assigned a task to produce the best portrait photograph. A customer from Joondalup Camera House took out the best portrait photograph and was awarded an awesome Kata bag!

The next course dates and location (the next course will be held in Fremantle) have been finalised so make sure you book early as spots are limited.

If you would like to find out more information about the camera courses please visit the camera course website here. On the website you will also find details of the brand new Adobe Lightroom course.

Pictured below are some of the photographs from the small group model shoot. Enjoy.

FroKnowsPhoto Raw Edit 52

I have been following Jared’s posts for a while now and decided that it was time to contribute to the RAW edit – Week 52.

Quite a good idea really. You download the provided RAW image and edit how you like then post it to the forum. Some of the work on the forum is truly amazing!

Here is my take on the RAW file:

Enjoy!

Here you go Ian. You can see the results. Maybe this is something I should do from now on. Post the finished versions after the video.

Thanks for stopping by!

One of the wedding team

Last weekend was slightly busy for me. I photographed a wedding in Albany on Saturday followed by the 2011 Photographers and Bloggers get together on Sunday.

I was fortunate to have a team of three along for the wedding, David as my photography assistant and Sheridan as my design consultant. I must say I couldn’t have done the shoot without you both!

Here is a photograph of Sheridan at the wedding just after we finished photographing the family groups. I shot this on the Canon EF 85mm f1.2 L Series with my new Canon EOS 1D MK IV. Such a beautiful lens…for anyone considering getting one – do it!

Andrew Halsall

Yesterday I went to Mutton Bird Beach with Andrew Halsall. The day was filled with blue skies and amazing ocean.

After mucking around trying to photograph an Osprey catching fish I took this image of Andrew as he was walking back to the 4WD.

I got my portrait taken by Andrew so you should see the first image of me to ever appear on my blog –  I think you have to have some sort of ego to be taking photos of yourself that’s why I have never posted one!!! Stay tuned for the “About Me” section on the blog where the photo will be appearing.

Also on another note my 1TB Hard drive is STILL backing up onto the 4TB drive. I’m a little bit impatient when it comes to computers so I had to go out and get another 2TB. Problem is all my work (including my frame actions) is on the other drive.  Will just have to wait I suppose. Hopefully the backup process will only take another couple of days.

Neon Avian

Last Thursday night went off at the Freo in Geraldton.  Neon Avian were playing their first live gig (from what I was told). The stage was set and the music was pumping. The pub went off!  All they needed was a decent photo…..I offered my services and here is the result.

Enjoy.

Make sure you have a look on iTunes for some of their songs!

Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive

I caught up with some of the guys from the world tour driving this extremely economical car. Couldn’t help myself I had to take a portrait!

A little bit about what they are trying to achieve:

With the “Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive” we will prove that the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL can manage not only challenging street and weather conditions but is also ready to inspire the world. Happy Shooting!

    Adrian & Skye

A big thanks goes out to Adrian and Skye for coming out for a shoot on such late notice to see the mighty X100 and play with some camera gear in the dark! If you haven’t already seem some of Adrian’s blog then check it out here.

We ran into trouble with this shoot as there was absolutely no light to focus the camera at all.  Adrian had to use his iphone torch app to shine some light on Skye and himself just so the camera would focus! Two 580EX II flash units were used for this image.

    Stephen Geppert – Amazing

Funny story actually….about seven weeks ago, as I was driving to Geraldton from Perth and about 200kms out of Perth, I saw this guy walking by the side of the road with two camels. I considered pulling over and taking a photo of the human caravan but alas as we all know photographers can be quite lazy so I ended up driving by and not thinking much of it at all….until last Thursday as I was driving from Port Hedland to Karratha I saw him again – seven weeks later! I decided it was time to put my portrait skills to good use.

I pulled over and introduced myself and asked if it would be alright to take a portrait. Stephen was more than happy to pose and even get on the camel for me.  Stephen Geppert explained that he is walking around Western Australia and the least I could do for the somewhat energetic traveler was take his photo for him.

From the research that I have conducted it seems that Brisbane born Geppert is planning to walk from Perth to Mitchell Falls at the top end of our massive state with two camels from Kalamunda Camels.  In the scorching heat of the Pilbara it seems that Stephen was in good spirts with his two companions, Wasim and Herman. He explained that one of the camels would normally be carrying the majority of his water (a total of about 238 litres) but he ran into trouble when the camel developed a saddle sore. As the dilemma unfolded he planned to have the camel’s saddle couriered from Karratha to Port Hedland to give the 20 year old beast a rest.

I am just amazed at what we can achieve if we can put our minds to it. Stephen seems to be the kind of guy who makes one believe that anything is possible. I only met him for about ten minutes but he certainly left an impression. His journey will take him through this great State of Western Australia where he is yet to experience the Tanami, Gibson, Great Victoria deserts followed by the Nullabor before continuing on back to Perth. I wish him all the best. I have sent this photo to him so he can treasure the memory forever.
